Sunday League Referees, Hackney Marshes, Referee

At Hackney Marshes, one the worlds most famous playing fields for Sunday League Football in London, I have captured this spirit through a series of portraits. At the forefront of every game and without whom the game cannot be fairly conducted is the referee. There’s something to be said about a person who turns up each week and gives their full concentration, devotion and efforts in giving twenty two players a good fair match. Personally, I don’t think it’s that little extra money that brings them back to the marshes every Sunday morning, but that feeling of pride and importance they take home that fuels their passion.
